Learn About Buell And Harley

The Buell Motorcycle Company is an American manufacturer of motorcycles based in East Troy, Wisconsin. It was founded by Erik Buell, the former of the Harley Davidson Company was working as an engineer. The Buell Motorcycle Company is the only major manufacturer of sporting motorcycles in the United States.

Eric F. Buell was in Pittsburgh, PA, born in 1950. He was raised on a farm to learn, to work on machinery at a young age. As a teenager, Buell took up motorcycle racing. His first bike was an Italian-made Parilla 90cc moped, his second a 74ci basket-case Harley Davidson. He began his career in motocross and was also interested in street racing in his early 20s.

Buell was also employed as a motorcycle mechanic during the day while taking classes in engineering at the University of Pittsburgh at night. He received his degree in mechanical engineering in 1979 and soon began the Harley Davidson in Milwaukee. This is where he started a design concept motorcycles and is involved with the Porsche Design “Nova” V-four program. He was also responsible for much of the improvement of stability, the chassis design of the FXR series of cruisers.

Buell’s loyalty to the Harley Davidson Company prevented him from racing Japanese, Italian motorcycles made in the 1980′2. This led rise to the purchase of a bicycle by a company produces in the UK. The company produces a limited production racer Barton, which was by a water cooled 750cc Square Four two Stoke-driven motor. The bicycle, however, was poorly done and Buell began his engineering talents and own designs to remake it because the parts are not.

Buell raced this prototype bike, which was still with the mostly-stock Barton engine, 1982 in the AMA National at Pocono Speedway. He called this bike the RW750 RW stands for the Road Warrior. During evaluation of the RW750 reached speeds of up to 178 miles per hour.

If the company Barton has been shut down in 1982 bought the whole stock Buell of spare engines and parts, all drawings and the rights to manufacture and market the engine. The shipment was delayed causing him to miss the possibility of using these plants for the 1983 season. The lack of reliability of the engine also caused Harley Davidson Barton to decline to give engineering and financial support for Buell when he asked. Then he left the company more time to devote to his racing efforts. Fortunately, the split was amicable.

Buell offered his RW750s for sale in 1984 with much success. The American Machinist’s Union Racing Team bought, tested and driven, the first sale to the public RW750. Unfortunately, by the spring of 1985, the AMA announced that the Formula One class was for the 1986 season leaving no market for Buell-machine set.

Buell continues to develop and improve its motorcycles with great success, all the time studying Harley Davidson’s concepts and maintaining a close relationship with the company. This success and partnership benefits both companies and the 1990 Harley Davidson 51 percent invested in the newly reformed Buell Motorcycle Company. By 2003, Harley Davidson bought complete control of Buell Motorcycle Company, and currently markets its bicycles through selected Harley Davidson dealer. Eric Buell is still responsible for the planning and design of Buell motorcycles.
