What it Takes to Join the CIA
There are more than “spy games” going on in the Central Intelligence Agency. A career in the CIA could be doing a series of activities, and not everything will be about espionage and covert operations. The CIA’s mission is to provide foreign intelligence for national security of the President and senior policymakers in the United States. To achieve this, the CIA has specialists in many fields, ranging from clandestine operations of mechanical engineering. The CIA has employees in all fields of study and backgrounds to gather and provide information that consumers need. The CIA offers career opportunities in five broad categories, each of which has different opportunities and needs for the application (most require at least a degree in national security related field, and very often, a degree or higher is preferred). The career opportunities are as follows: the positions of analysis, the clandestine service, positions of language, scientist, engineer, and the positions of technology and support services.

Positions of analysis once the intelligence is that someone sought to analyze and contextualize the importance of such intelligence. Trained intelligence analysts must possess advanced critical thinking and analytical problem solving with a strong knowledge of their subject. Some of the positions of analyst for the CIA are counterterrorism, counterintelligence and intelligence collection. A background of any of these issues would be invaluable for a career in the CIA.
Clandestine Service: the CIA’s clandestine service provides the information needed by policymakers in the United States to protect the interests of national security. You must fill out a 12 months Clandestine Service Training (CST) Program to begin their career as a field-based Core Collector for the CIA. Core Collector’s participation in all aspects of clandestine operations in carrying out their assignments overseas. Knowledge of intelligence collection, counterintelligence and intelligence operations will provide the background needed to succeed in the CIA’s clandestine service.
Almost all job opportunities at the CIA requires a bachelor’s or master. In order to prepare for what it takes to be involved with the CIA, the knowledge within the intelligence community will benefit all those interested in pursuing a career with the CIA. While much of the work that the CIA and other intelligence agencies was held behind closed doors, there are many aspects of the CIA that can be known through open sources to help you understand how our nation collects, analyzes and uses intelligence to protect and preserve its interests.
